Jewish Women’s Artist Network (JWAN) Caucus of WCA invites you to a special Zoom Presentation featuring Karen Frostig: “What happens when we forget to remember?
Karen Frostig will update her relationship with the WCA by discussing her current focus as a memorial artist dealing with her family’s Holocaust history. She will begin with a presentation about The Vienna Project (2013-2014), a multi-media memorial representing seven different victim groups, over the duration of one year. The project positions memory as a teaching tool used to address antisemitism and racism, and preserve human rights agendas in all regions of the word. Currently she is Founding Director of the Locker of Memory Project, honoring victims of the Jungfernhof concentration camp since 2019, located in Riga, Latvia. She was a Resident Scholar at Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center (2010-2021) and is now an affiliated scholar at the center. She holds dual citizenship in the United States and in the Republic of Austria. Public art is often steeped in political ideology, and very costly. In times of great upheaval, securing funds for large projects can be especially challenging. Karen will discuss her fiduciary relationship with the WCA, which has allowed her to solicit and receive tax deductible contributions. Karen presented her family’s history and her work at the United Nations General Assembly, 2023 Holocaust Day Remembrance Program and received national attention in the Sunday edition of the New York Times and other major news outlets.
