CRASH COURSE FOR WOMEN ARTISTS:
How to survive and thrive With the WCA Young Women’s Caucus

In this crash course, Young Women’s Caucus members Mattie Sterling, Njeri Kinuthia, and Rachel Simmons will share best practices on how to build a strong portfolio, write compelling artist statements, and enhance your online website and social media presence.

Mattie Sterling, an activist figurative painter based in Savannah, Georgia, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Functioning as a feminist, activist, writer, and painter, Sterling dedicates her life’s work to gender equality. She utilizes her lifestyle and art to challenge heterosexist tyranny and hierarchical traditions, advocating for positive social change within women’s civil and identity politics, empowerment, and sexuality.
Sterling serves as the Membership Chair of the Women’s Caucus for Art and the Chair of the Young Women’s Caucus for Art. She consistently explores the female figure and the emancipation of women’s sexuality by engaging in exhibitions, publications, writing on Feminist Art, and in discussions on sexuality and sex positivity. Her recent body of work leverages the sexual capital of her models to address questionable beliefs and societal dogma surrounding women’s sexuality.

Njeri Kinuthia, born and raised in Kenya, moved to the U. S. in 2021 to pursue her MFA at the University of Central Florida. Her artistic talent has been recognized with awards, including the UCF Provost Fellowship Award, the 2024 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art People’s Choice Award, the 2025 United Arts Award, among others. She is a multi-disciplinary artist working in drawing, painting, installations, textile art and soft sculptures. Njeri has showcased her work in numerous exhibitions across the country and beyond. She is also a professor at the University of Central Florida. Her work explores identity beyond tradition.

Rachel Simmons (b. 1996) is a multi-disciplinary artist who specializes in installation-based work and photography. Understanding identity is a primary focus in Simmons’ art; her practice examines shared femme experiences and how they shape behavior and self-perception. Her art explores topics like: the hypersexualization of the femme body; the lingering impacts of objectification and exploitation; the societal role of caretaking; and the need for external validation. Simmons seeks to empower others and inspire resilience by sharing her story through her work.”
